California Apple owners can get money after $95M settlement. How to file a claim
Have you ever felt like Siri is listening in on you?
If so, you may be eligible to file a claim for part of a $95 million settlement tied to allegations that Apple’s voice assistant eavesdropped on private conversations.
The class action lawsuit — Lopez v. Apple Inc. — was filed in December, alleging that some customers with Siri enabled on their Apple devices had their confidential conversations recorded.
A whistleblower told The Guardian in 2019 that Apple contractors frequently received recordings from the company’s voice assistant that contained personal information ranging from drugs deals to medical records and people having sex.
Apple agreed to the settlement but denied all lawsuit allegations and that it “did anything improper or unlawful,” according to the settlement website.
The company said it had “never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising and never sold it to anyone for any purpose,” according to a January news release.
Here’s how to get a piece of the nearly $100 million Apple settlement:
Who is eligible for Apple settlement payout in California?
Californians who purchased or owned an Apple device with Siri enabled can claim a slice of the $95 million settlement — with some caveats.
To be eligible for the payout, Apple users had to have activated the voice assistant between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024.
In addition, they must have experienced a time when Siri was unintentionally activated during a confidential conversation or private moment.
Siri users must live in the United States or its territories to claim part of the settlement.
You could be eligible for the settlement if you own Siri-enabled devices including an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch and Apple TV, the settlement website said.
How to submit a Siri settlement claim online
Eligible consumers can submit a Siri claim online at the Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website.
Some Siri users may have gotten an email or postcard with a claim identification code and a confirmation code that should be used when making the claim.
Apple customers who didn’t receive the codes can still apply for the payout if they believe they’re eligible, the website said.
When is the deadline to submit a claim?
You must apply for the settlement by Wednesday, July 2, to be eligible for the payment.
“This is the only way to get a payment,” the settlement website said.
How much money could Apple customers get?
Claimants could receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, according to the settlement website.
Settlement amounts could increase or decrease depending on the number of valid claims submitted, the website said.
Apple customers can submit payout claims for up to five devices that had previously activated the voice assistant.
When will payments be distributed?
There is no set date on when settlement checks will be delivered, settlement administrators said.
The U.S. District Court will hold a final approval hearing at 9 a.m. on Aug 1. However, that court date could be moved or delayed to a different date.
If the settlement is approved, there could be appeals after that, according to the settlement website.
“If there is no appeal, your settlement benefit will be processed promptly,” the website said. “Please be patient.”
