See 150-acre Big Sur ranch with ocean views for sale for $100M. It’s a family legacy
A 150-acre property with boundless views of the Pacific Ocean along the rugged Central California coastline of Big Sur has hit the market for the first time in nearly 60 years for $100 million.
Cyril Chappellet, a former Lockheed executive, purchased the land in 1965. It’s now being sold by his grandchildren, C. Blake, Michele and Kira Forrest, according to Coldwell Banker Realty.
The land was once owned by the pioneering Pfeiffer family. Michael and Barbara Pfeiffer settled in Big Sur in 1869.
“Four generations of our family have spent time on this property for the past 60 years,” C. Blake Forrest said in a statement. “As kids, my sisters and I would spend most of our summers at the ‘ranch,’ as he called it. We had countless family gatherings for six decades and it is also where my siblings and I raised our own families. We hope the next owners will embrace this property, share it with their family and preserve the beauty of it for generations to come.”
The property, one of several parcels once owned by Chappellet, has access to a private beach and views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. There are three separate family homes on the parcel, along with manicured gardens, fruit orchards, outdoor living spaces, ample terrain for raising livestock and poultry. A private road leads down to the shoreline and private beaches.
The compound is known as Heart of Rancho Rico, located at 47320 Highway 1 and 47324 Highway 1.
“Heart of Rancho Rico is an irreplaceable and timeless property with vast Pacific Ocean views of the coastline to the north and about 80 visible miles to the south,” listing agent Tim Allen of Tim Allen Properties Team, Coldwell Banker Realty, said in an email. “Many long-standing residents in the region have an affinity for the history of this property. It provides the ultimate Big Sur lifestyle with privacy, peaceful living and endless adventures to explore the 150 acres of coastal paradise.”
Among the ranch’s features are:
▪ Main House: The modern ranch-style home, built in the late 1940s spans 3,750 square feet with four en suite bedrooms, an additional partial bathroom and three fireplaces. The residence, surrounded by coastal and mountain views, comprises beautiful gardens, an enclosed loggia and a two-car garage;
▪ Ranch House: Built in 1995, the two-story home has four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and 2,500 square feet of living space;
▪ Garden House: Built in 2001, the residence provides three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, one fireplace and 1,960 square feet of living space;
.▪ A discrete gateway provides access to the property, and a well-maintained road meandering past redwood, oak, bay and madrone trees to the main meadow, 1,000 feet above the shoreline;
▪ 360-degree views take in the Santa Lucia Mountains and Pacific Ocean;
▪ Fresh spring water supplies parts of the property and flows down to two private beaches below;
▪ An orchard contains 80 deciduous, citrus, avocado and nut trees.
“Finally, the opportunity is here to acquire one of the rarest offerings in Big Sur/Coastal California history,” the property listing states.
