Secretary of State Shirley Weber, singer John Legend promote California voter rights restoration

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber teamed up with singer, songwriter and philanthropist John Legend to promote the restored voting rights for formerly incarcerated people.

In a newly released public service announcement video, Weber and the singer born John Stephens informed people that, yes, in California people who are incarcerated, formerly incarcerated or on probation can register and cast their vote in the upcoming presidential election.

According to the Secretary of State, individuals who have been convicted of a felony and are serving a state or federal prison term cannot vote. Their rights to vote are restored upon their release once they re-register.

Voting rights are extended to those who are on parole, probation, mandatory supervision, post-release community supervision, federal supervised release, awaiting trial or a person with a juvenile wardship adjudication.

“Voting is about having a say in decisions about our lives, our families’ lives, and our communities. We each have one vote and it’s one of the most important tools we have to lift up our communities, advocate for our beliefs, and create a better future for our families,” Weber said in a news release. “People who have their voting rights restored should exercise their right to vote. I appreciate that Mr. Legend is partnering with us to encourage those eligible to vote to do so.”

Weber asked in their public service announcement video, why current or formerly incarcerated people might be hesitant to vote.

“People haven’t really felt connected to their communities, and they’re worried it will negatively impact them,” Legend said in response. “They shouldn’t be afraid, because it is their right. 100% participating in our elections gives people a sense of belonging and unity, and in a nation that feels profoundly divided, that is a reason to show up and vote.”

Weber and Legend want to ensure that all voting citizens are taken into account during this election season.

“It’s vital that all voices are heard — including those who have regained their voting rights—so we can shape a future that reflects the diverse needs of our communities,” Stephens said in a news release. “When our democracy includes everyone, our democracy can better serve everyone.”

The general election is Nov. 5.
