Are celebrity eagles Jackie and Shadow safe amid California wildfires? What to know
As fires rage across California, many may be worried about the wildlife trying to flee from the flames, including famed bald eagles Jackie and Shadow.
Thankfully, these eagles in Big Bear Valley are safe from the fires, the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam said in a Sept. 9 Facebook post.
The Line Fire is burning just southwest of Big Bear Valley. It has burned nearly 40,000 acres, including parts of the San Bernardino National Forest, CalFire reports.
It is 18% contained as of Sept. 12.
Areas in southwestern Big Bear have been evacuated, but the order doesn’t include the area where the eagles nest, Cali Condor, an admin for a Jackie and Shadow Facebook group, said in a Sept. 12 post.
“There is NO immediate threat to the nesting area,” Condor said.
Additionally, mountain ridges and high peaks separate the fire from the area.
Although the eagle pair hasn’t been seen visiting the nest recently, they have been spotting roosting in a nearby tree in the past few weeks, the nonprofit said in the post.
The public shouldn’t worry about this behavior.
“Jackie and Shadow often disappear for a day or two when unusual situations happen, such as lots of smoke in the air,” the nonprofit said.
“In the meantime, we will keep an eye out for Jackie and Shadow visits, and be holding positive thoughts that the ‘evacuation warning’ remains only a precautionary warning,” the nonprofit said.
