Early unofficial results are coming in for the California midterms. Here’s what we know so far:
Gov. Gavin Newsom will be keeping his seat at the Capitol, the Associated Press called at 8 p.m.
California Sen. Alex Padilla wins two contests this midterm election, allowing him to finish his term and start a new one.
Preliminary results from the Sacramento region are in for California ballot measures, congressional seats and local races.

Here are the latest election results for California’s 7 ballot propositions
Proposition 30, California ‘millionaires’ tax for electric vehicles, still up in the air
Early results are showing a majority of Sacramento residents are in favor of Measure O, an initiative that would allow city officials to clear homeless encampments.
Sacramento residents are also showing support for Measure A, a proposed sales tax increase in the county to fund a new suburban expressway, an expansion of the light rail system and new bridges.

Here are six key takeaways from early results in California, including the governor’s race, the U.S. Senate contest, Prop. 1 to add abortion rights to the state constitution, dueling sports betting measures propositions 26 and 27, Prop. 30 and Measure O in Sacramento.
Reminder: These are early and unofficial results posted just after polls closed at 8 p.m. They were last updated at 8:39 p.m.
Governor’s race
Democratic incumbent Gov. Gavin Newsom wins a second term, the Associated Press reports. He leads with 63.4% of votes. Republican state Sen. Brian Dahle trails with 36.6%.
U.S. Senate
Sen. Alex Padilla has gained 64.7% of the votes in the full-term race for California’s open U.S. Senate seat. Republican attorney Mark Meuser trails with 35.3%.
Padilla has 64.5% of votes in the partial term race.
Proposition 1
Voters are leaning “yes” on Prop. 1, which would add existing abortion rights to the state constitution. In early results, approval of the measure has 70.1% of votes.
Propositions 26 and 27
Voters are leaning “no” on both sports betting measures, props 26 and 27. In early results, disapproval for Prop. 26 has 71.1% of votes. Disapproval for Prop. 27 has 84.2% of votes.
Proposition 30
Voters are leaning “no” on Prop. 30, which would allow for increasing personal income tax for those earning more than $2 million annually, in an effort to fund pollution and wildfire prevention programs. Disapproval is leading with 57.2% of votes.
Measure O in Sacramento
Measure O in Sacramento, addresses homelessness by allowing city officials to move encampments and increase shelter spaces. Voters are leaning “yes” with 56.6% votes.

California polls are about to close. Here’s when early results come out
UPDATE: 7 p.m. Tuesday
Registered voters in California have been casting their ballots since October, and soon they’ll being counted across the state.
After vote centers close, county elections officials and the Secretary of State will begin tallying votes. Early results you’ll see tonight are unofficial, but it’ll give you a glimpse of who is in the lead for races, as well as statewide propositions and city measures.
California election results are expected to roll in starting after polls close at 8 p.m., according to the Associated Press.
In Sacramento County, the first release of results will be announced at about 8:15 p.m., reflecting early voting and not include in-person ballots received on the day of the election. There will be two more updates throughout the night, according to the county, at 10 p.m. and midnight. These will reflect in-person votes. You can find live updates on results on the county website and at sacbee.com.
Official results, certified by the Secretary of State, will be announced by Dec. 16 on the department’s website.
