Gunshots that wounded a man just outside a youth football game in Ontario sparked panic among the crowd, California police reported.

“Everybody scurrying everywhere,” Khalia Walk told KNBC. “You had parents jumping over the gates to get their kids on the field. It was a mess.”

Someone shot a 34-year-old man multiple times on a sidewalk between the parking lot and football field at Colony High School at 10:45 a.m., the Los Angeles Times reported. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The shooting took place during a football league game for 7- and 8-year-olds at the field, KNBC reported. The game was initially halted, then canceled and people were told to leave.

Police reported on Twitter that the man was “targeted,” and said there was no threat to the public or school.

They do not know how many people were involved or why the man was shot, police told KABC.

“It’s a beautiful morning and it really was turned sour with all of this outside commotion, confusion, and it’s trickled off into our community, our neighborhood and really caused a feeling of unsafeness,” neighbor Felicia English told KTLA.

Ontario is a city of 175,000 about 35 miles east of Los Angeles.
