A body was found in a California pond after a report of “foul odor,” authorities said.

Officers located the body of a “male person” in the water at Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside following the call about the odor at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, the Oceanside Police Department said.

As the “cause of death is unclear,” police said they are conducting a suspicious death investigation, and the coroner’s office will do an autopsy.

The person’s name is being withheld until police can notify the next-of-kin, officials said.

Oceanside is about 40 miles north of San Diego.
