California man wins $20 million on lottery scratcher. Here’s what he’ll buy
Not bad for a scratch-and-win.
An Auburn man recently won a $20 million grand prize on a $30 scratcher, the California Lottery announced Tuesday – the biggest payday in state history on such a ticket.
Chad Fry stopped for “some beer and a Lottery ticket” at Foothill Market in Auburn, lottery officials said in a news release. He ended up at the convenience store along Interstate 80 after leaving the house to buy a pair of shorts.
Fry bought a “Set for Life” ticket and scratched it in the parking lot to reveal the “Life” symbol on the second line, bestowing the option of $800,000 a year for 25 years – $20 million – or a lump sum payment of more than half that.
Fry elected to take the latter, worth $11.6 million before federal taxes, lottery officials said. California does not tax lottery winnings.
According to the California Lottery, “Set for Life” is the highest-paying scratcher it offers. The next highest jackpot is $10 million.
Fry told lottery officials that he plans to buy a new Ford F-250 truck with his winnings.
He’ll have plenty left over after that.
Auburn has been on a lottery hot streak lately, along with Sacramento.
An AM/PM store in Auburn sold a $550,000-winning Powerball ticket last year on Christmas. The store is directly next door to Foothill Market on Lincoln Way.
Then in early January, a 7-Eleven store in Sacramento’s Valley Hi neighborhood sold a $2 Powerball ticket that matched all six numbers, earning its buyer a jackpot worth $316 million (about $141 million as a lump sum, after federal taxes).
