Men caught with 57 watermelons in car after stealing from field, California cops say
Two men are accused of stealing 57 watermelons from a field and stuffing them in the trunk and backseat of a car, authorities in California said.
Deputies responded to a call about trespassing the evening on Monday, Aug. 15, according to a Facebook post from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arriving, the deputies spoke with a man who said “people were stealing watermelons from his field,” the post says.
Deputies said they saw the car leaving and stopped the it, where they found “several watermelons located in the backseat and trunk of the car.”
Deputies learned that one of the suspects was on a pretrial Electronic Monitoring Program, officials said.
The lot of nearly five dozen watermelons was recovered and returned to the victim, the post says.
The two men were arrested and are facing a number of charges related to the theft, including felony grand theft of fruit, according to jail records.
Merced County is about 70 miles northwest of Fresno.
