‘I thank God for this day.’ Abortion foes hail Supreme Court decision overturning Roe
”I thank God for this day. Thank God that His mercies are new each day and He is the giver of life.”
That’s how Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Washington, expressed her deep satisfaction with the Supreme Court ruling Friday overturning the federal constitutional right to abortion.
The Republican Party has been considered the anti-abortion party since roughly the late 1970s. Its activists have been on a relentless quest to overturn Roe since it was decided in 1973.
Friday, dozens of Republicans appeared at a Capitol press conference to voice their support for the ruling, and many of the speakers were women.
The House GOP leadership issued a joint statement saying “Every unborn child is precious, extraordinary, and worthy of protection. We applaud this historic ruling, which will save countless innocent lives.
“The Supreme Court is right to return the power to protect the unborn to the people’s elected representatives in Congress and the states,” they said. “In the days and weeks following this decision, we must work to continue to reject extreme policies that seek to allow late-term abortions and taxpayer dollars to fund these elective procedures.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, called the court decision “the most important pro-life ruling in American history…the people have won a victory. The right to life has been vindicated. The voiceless will finally have a voice.”
Other California Republicans had similar thoughts.
”Today, life wins!” tweeted Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Oroville.
He said Roe v. Wade was created by “a partisan, unelected Court nearly 50 years ago and does not represent the values of our nation. It is past time that the radical Democrat one-party rule stop imposing their immoral and dangerous agenda on the American people”.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-San Marcos, called Friday “a great day for the cause and the principle of life.”
In the Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., echoed those thoughts, calling the decision “courageous and correct.”
He said “millions of Americans have spent half a century praying, marching, and working toward today’s historic victories for the rule of law and for innocent life.”
Also commenting in a statement Friday was former President Donald Trump.
“Today’s decision, which is the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation, along with other decisions that have been announced recently, were only made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong,” he said. Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, all Trump appointees, voted with the majority.”
