Suspect in fatal shooting of California DoorDash driver is arrested

Modesto police have arrested a suspect in the killing of Andrew Satavu, the DoorDash driver who was fatally shot while out delivering food last month.

Using surveillance images located during the investigation, Detectives with MPD’s Violent Crimes Unit identified the suspect as 46-year-old Modesto resident Mario Uriel Esparza, according to a press release.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, and on Tuesday afternoon, Esparza was contacted by the California Highway Patrol during a traffic stop on Interstate 405 near Carson, in Southern California.

Modesto police took custody of Esparza and booked him into Stanislaus County jail on suspicion of murder, with an enhancement for using a gun.

Satavu had just delivered a food order in the 1600 block of Gardenia Road the night of April 18 when witnesses reported hearing gunfire.

When officers arrived, they found Satavu in his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Earlier this week, authorities released video of a car believed to have been involved. They confirmed Wednesday the car shown belonged to the suspect.

Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said a motive has not yet been determined.
