4.1-magnitude earthquake hits near California’s Pinnacles National Park, geologists say
A 4.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of California on Sunday, March 13, geologists reported.
The earthquake rattled near Pinnacles at about 1:50 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Light shaking could be felt in Santa Cruz and Salinas.
Dozens of people reported feeling the earthquake shortly after it occurred, according to USGS.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 6 miles north of Pinnacles National Park.
No damage was reported as of Sunday afternoon.
Magnitude measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey says. It replaces the old Richter scale.
Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Quakes below 2.5 magnitude are seldom felt by most people.
