DMV behind-the-wheel tests are starting up again — with restrictions
After the California Department of Motor Vehicles reopened almost all of its field offices across the state, officials said they’ve begun tackling a backlog of behind-the-wheel tests.
These exams — crucial to obtaining a driver license — were put on hold amid fears of the coronavirus.
Starting Friday, however, the DMV’s opened field offices are offering these tests to prospective drivers who already have appointments — with some restrictions.
The drive test may be shorter than normal, a release said. DMV examiners will wear face coverings and gloves. And during the drive, at least two windows must be lowered. Test-takers in certain California counties will have to get their temperature checked, too.
Just don’t expect to make a new appointment anytime soon.
A DMV news release said the backlog could take several weeks to clear. New appointments can only be made once this happens.
“I’m asking for everyone’s patience as we safely clear the backlog of behind-the-wheel drive test appointments,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said in the release. “For all of those Californians who have been waiting, we know how important this is to you.”
