Don’t like wearing a face mask? Schwarzenegger and Newsom say ‘Just do it.’

Not enough Californians are wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, California Gov. Gavin Newsom says, so he’s teaming up with four former governors to release a new ad telling them to “just do it.”

“Simply put, we are seeing too many people with faces uncovered – putting at risk the real progress we have made in fighting the disease,” Newsom said in a statement about the timing of the ad. “California’s strategy to restart the economy and get people back to work will only be successful if people act safely and follow health recommendations. That means wearing a face covering, washing your hands and practicing physical distancing.”

The ad features former Democratic governors Jerry Brown and Gray Davis, as well as former Republican governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson, urging Californians to wear a mask.

They also take some time to poke a little fun.

“Nobody wants to wear these things,” says a mask-clad Brown.

“(COVID 19) didn’t go away just because your mall is open at 50% capacity,” Schwarzenegger says.

The ad comes as COVID-19 continues to spread in the state. California has recorded 173,824 coronavirus cases, including 5,495 fatalities, according to the latest data from the California Department of Public Health.

Newsom on Thursday issued an order that it is mandatory to wear masks when indoors in public spaces.

“Science shows that face coverings and masks work. They are critical to keeping those around you safe, keeping businesses open and restarting our economy,” Newsom said.
