Want to volunteer? Here’s a new California website that can show you how
Healthy Californians looking to make a difference have a new platform with which to do so, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced at his Tuesday coronavirus press conference.
Newsom announced a new website, californiansforall.ca.gov, where people can sign up to volunteer for such things as working at a food bank, giving blood or delivery meals to seniors.
“It’s been said that each of us will be judged, but moreover judge ourselves to the extent to which we contribute to the life of our city, our county, our state, our nation and the world we’re trying to build,” Newsom said.
The website is a collaboration with nonprofit partners intended “to initiate a much more comprehensive approach to capturing that spirit of generosity, the spirit of contribution, the spirit of service that resides in millions and millions of Californians,” Newsom said.
The governor said the need is dire. State food banks have lost 70 percent of their volunteers since the pandemic began, he said.
California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday, said that the project involves the work of a coalition of nonprofit organizations, including the Red Cross, area United Ways, the California Food Banks Association and others.
People who sign up will receive weekly emails that will detail both state and local volunteering priorities, he said.
“If you’re healthy and you can make a difference in your community, we need you at food banks, we need you giving blood, we need you delivering meals, and we need you joining us,” Fryday said.
