New IRS website lets you update bank information and check status of coronavirus payment
If you need to update your bank account information with the Internal Revenue Service in order to receive your stimulus check, you can at the IRS website as of today.
You can also now check when you’re likely to receive your payment if the IRS already has your information.
The IRS launched the new part of the website, which it calls Get My Payment Wednesday morning. It allows people to update their bank account information or address to receive their checks.
Congress voted to provide a $1,200 check for most Americans and $500 for most child dependents in a coronavirus aid bill passed in March.
Most people do not need to provide additional information to the IRS. The agency takes the information from your 2019 or 2018 filed tax return to either directly deposit your check in your bank account or mail it to your address.
The people who need to provide more information through the website are mainly those who owed money to the federal government rather than received money on their latest tax return.
The IRS is not allowing people to update information from a 2019 tax return.
“We will send your payment using the information you provided with your 2019 tax return,” the website states. “You will not be able to change it.”
Patricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Treasury Department, said that will not change, as it was a measure taken to “protect against potential fraud.”
About 80 million payments hit bank accounts last weekend and throughout this week, according to the IRS.
“Get My Payment will offer people with a quick and easy way to find the status of their payment and, where possible, provide their bank account information if we don’t already have it,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “Our IRS employees have been working non-stop on the Economic Impact Payments to help taxpayers in need. In addition to successfully generating payments to more than 80 million people, IRS teams throughout the country proudly worked long days and weekends to quickly deliver Get My Payment ahead of schedule.”
Get My Payment is updated once daily, usually overnight, according to an IRS release. Users need to enter information such as your Social Security number, date of birth and address in order to check on the status of their returns.
If the IRS needs you to update information, it will automatically take you to a page to enter certain items such as your bank account information, the amount you owed or received on your last federal tax return and your taxable income.
A Spanish version of Get My Payment is expected in a few weeks, according to the IRS.
The IRS launched a portal last week for people who do not file tax returns, typically either because they receive social security payments or have low income, where they can provide their information.
