‘Open season on police:’ San Francisco DA slammed for not charging man in cop attack
San Francisco’s new District Attorney won’t charge the man accused of attacking two police officers.
Police said Jamaica Hampton, 24, was shot in December after attacking two police officers with a glass bottle, according to Fox 2. Hampton’s leg was amputated as a result and he’s still hospitalized.
District Attorney Chesa Boudin said he won’t charge Hampton because the officers are under investigation for the incident, NBC Bay Area reported.
Boudin withdrew the charges on Jan. 24, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
“Mr. Hampton remains in the hospital in serious condition so there is no public safety concern with allowing the investigation to proceed and for my office to obtain more information on (both) sides of the investigation,” Boudin told the Examiner.
Boudin’s decision sparked backlash from police.
“Mr. Boudin has made it very clear that it’s open season on police officers,” Tony Montoya, the San Francisco Police Association president, told NBC Bay Area.
San Francisco’s police union has called upon federal investigators to intervene on the case, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
“That should be cause for alarm for everybody in San Francisco, whether you’re a resident, a business owner, a tourist or a police officer,” San Francisco Police Officers Association President Tony Montoya said at a press conference. “He is going to put the suspect’s rights over the rights of real victims.”
The San Francisco Police Department previously revealed body cam footage of the incident, ABC7 reported.
In the video, Hampton can be seen attacking Officer Sterling Hayes, according to ABC7. Another officer, Christopher Flores, uses his baton, but Hampton hits him in the head with a bottle. Hayes uses pepper spray before firing his gun six times.
