Texas Gas Price Alert: Where to Find the Cheapest Gas in Texas Right Now (Some Stations Under $3.40)

Texas Gas Prices Today

The trend is finally moving in the drivers' favor. The statewide average in Texas is $3.49 a gallon for regular, nine cents less than a week ago, though still 69 cents higher than this day last year, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That puts Texas roughly 50 cents under the national average, which is hovering right around $4.00. AAA Texas

Why Texas Stays Cheaper Than Most

Texas runs 15 to 25 cents a gallon below the US average year-round thanks to 29 refineries along the Gulf Coast that process about 43 percent of the country's gasoline. Supply sits close to the pump, so Texas drivers feel less of the squeeze when national prices spike.

Where to Find the Cheapest Gas

For the lowest fill-ups, head to the border or a warehouse club. The cheapest tracked station is a Murphy USA in Mission at $3.36 a gallon, and historically, warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam's Club lead on price, followed by Murphy USA, Buc-ee's, HEB, and Walmart. A quick check on GasBuddy before you fill up can shave real money off a tank.

Filling Up Before July 4

Timing matters with the holiday rush coming. AAA Texas projects 5.7 million Texans will travel at least 50 miles from home for Independence Day between June 27 and July 5. At the state average, a 15-gallon tank runs about $53.70, so topping off early in the week can beat the weekend price creep.

What to Watch Next

Prices have been sliding statewide, but the holiday travel surge and any swing in crude could nudge them back up. For now, Texas stays one of the best places in the country to fill the tank.
