The Highest-Rated Compact SUVs For 2026 Come Down To Subaru Vs Toyota

Finding the perfect balance of utility, efficiency, and tech can be a difficult task in today's complex motoring landscape, but compact SUVs tend to tick more of these boxes than most. That still doesn't mean your search is over, as there are dozens of compact SUVs out there, and not all are built to last. So we did the digging to find the five highest rated compact SUVs currently on the market, as rated by Consumer Reports (CR).

A high score from CR is far more than an exercise in marketing, it is the result of thorough independent testing that incorporates real-world feedback from thousands of actual owners. To earn a top spot on this list, each vehicle must score highly across a broad list of categories, including reliability, owner satisfaction, safety and a comprehensive road test.

All vehicle pricing and specifications data was sourced from the relevant manufacturer while the crash test data was sourced from the IIHS and NHTSA. So, here are the top compact SUVs of 2026 in ascending order.

5. Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid | 83/100

  • Model Years: 2023–on
  • Base MSRP:$40,490
  • Road Test Score: 90/100
  • Predicted Reliability: 57/100
  • Predicted Owner Satisfaction: 52/100

With a road test score of 90/100, Kia has clearly gone to great lengths to ensure that the Sportage offers a great driving experience. The Plug-In Hybrid system transitions well between gas and electric power, and an EPA rated 34-mile all-electric range means that you may hardly need to use the gas engine at all if you predominantly do short trips.

The quiet cabin, intuitive infotainment system and smooth ride quality are the notable plus points, but as it stands the predicted reliability figure is low due to a few electrical and charging glitches on some cars. It does command a fair premium over its regular hybrid and gas stablemates, but if you make the most of its all-electric range, the running costs can be very low.

4. Lexus NX Hybrid | 85/100

  • Model Years: 2022–on
  • Base MSRP:$46,570
  • Road Test Score: 88/100
  • Predicted Reliability: 68/100
  • Predicted Owner Satisfaction: 73/100

As the sole luxury compact SUV here, the NX Hybrid proves that high-end tech and reliability can co-exist, as long as you buy a Lexus that is. The NX Hybrid shares much of its running gear with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which is a solid base to work on, but it offers a far more premium interior with advanced tech and plenty of customization options.

The predicated reliability score of 68/100 is decent, but it does pull down the overall score slightly as some models have suffered from 12-volt battery drain and other minor issues. Overall, the Lexus NX is a cost-effective luxury offering that promises low running costs without compromising on the premium driving experience.

3. Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid | 86/100

Model Years: 2026–on

Base MSRP:$41,500

Road Test Score: 87/100

Predicted Reliability: 77/100

Predicted Owner Satisfaction: 80/100

The RAV4 has been redesigned for 2026 and it is now even better than before with a duo of Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid engines on offer and a completely new look inside and out. The Plug-In Hybrid scored highly across all segments, and its new powertrain delivers serious acceleration with the potential for great fuel economy, too.

Claimed to be able to drive for 54 miles on electric power, and delivering 324-hp combined, this is the sportiest compact SUV to make the top five. It's practical, too, with plenty of interior space and enough tech to keep everyone happy.

2. Subaru Forester | 86/100

Model Years: 2025–on

Base MSRP:$29,995

Road Test Score: 94/100

Predicted Reliability: 60/100

Predicted Owner Satisfaction: 77/100

The Forester is another compact SUV that was recently redesigned, and Subaru has shown once again that a simple, rugged design at an affordable price point is what customers really value. The 94/100 is joint highest here and underlines the overall competence of the new Forester. It isn't quick, and the CVT transmission can cause the engine to drone under hard acceleration, but the controls are intuitive, it rides over rough surfaces well, and the airy cabin is spacious and comfortable. Considering its sub-$30,000 starting price, the Forester is a tough act to follow.

Model Years: 2025-on

Base MSRP:$34,730

Road Test Score: 94/100

Predicted Reliability: 63/100

Predicted Owner Satisfaction: 79/100

Adding hybrid assistance to the Forester range has given this rugged compact SUV even more appeal, and it tops the charts for 2026 thanks to a solid performance across all categories. While the hybrid engine doesn't make the Forester any quicker, it helps improve fuel economy while still offering all the benefits of the gas-only models. It is also well-priced for a hybrid SUV, and the standard AWD and rugged design make it a great companion regardless of the road conditions.
