These Are the Most Reliable Luxury SUVs You Can Buy Right Now
To qualify as one of the most reliable luxury SUVs currently on sale, a vehicle needs to balance high-end performance, advanced tech and premium fit and finish with long-term mechanical consistency. To ensure that we covered all luxury SUVs currently on sale, we didn't stick to a minimum price or specific body size. And by using data from Consumer Reports, we get access to thousands of real owner's experiences across 17 different metrics, ranging from the engine and transmission to in-car electronics.
Reliability takes a while to establish and assess, and the scores below reflect Consumer Reports' 2025 Predicted Reliability data, which analyses owner survey results from the last three model years to predict how new vehicles will perform. All vehicle data and pricing info was sourced from the relevant manufacturer.
1. Lexus GX
- Reliability Score: 89/100
- Model Years: 2024 on
- Most Popular Trim: Luxury
- Current Base MSRP:$67,735
The Lexus GX is regularly at the top of the charts, and it is once again the most reliable luxury SUV on sale. This is thanks in no small part to its heritage of over-engineering. While the 2024 redesign introduced a new engine, the score remains bolstered by the previous generation's near-perfect track record and Lexus's conservative rollout of new tech.
However, it remains to be seen how the transition to a twin-turbo V6 impacts the reliability score in the future. The GX still has a rugged body-on-frame construction that is built for durability, and it uses high-quality mechanical components shared with Toyota's global Land Cruiser platform, which is designed for a 25-year service life in harsh environments.
2. BMW X5
- 2025 Reliability Score: 82/100
- Model Years: 2019 on (Facelifted in 2024)
- Most Popular Trim: xDrive40i
- Current Base MSRP:$68,300
Perhaps surprisingly to some, the BMW X5 consistently ranks as one of the most reliable luxury SUVs on sale today. This is partly due to a platform that has had several years to mature and the B58 inline-six engine used on some trims, which has proven to be particularly robust. The iDrive infotainment software has also proven to be less troublesome than rival systems. However, like many other vehicles with air suspension systems, there is always the likelihood of expensive bellow leaks after the 100,000-mile mark.
3. Lexus RX
- 2025 Reliability Score: 81/100
- Model Years: 2022 on
- Most Popular Trim: Premium+
- Current Base MSRP:$52,275
The Lexus RX relies on tried-and-tested technologies to achieve it high reliability scores, although its performance dipped a bit in 2022 when it shifted away from V6 to turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Four years on and there have been very few reported issues regarding heat management or turbo failure, helping the RX climb back up to near the top of the field. Its popularity among new and used car buyers stems from its exceptionally quiet cabin and smooth ride, although the electronic door latches have come in for some criticism by some owners.
4. Acura MDX
- 2025 Reliability Score: 75/100
- Model Years: 2021 on
- Most Popular Trim: Technology Package
- Current Base MSRP:$51,800
The Acura MDX remains a top choice for those wanting an affordable luxury SUV that also offers three rows of seating. It uses a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine that Honda has refined for decades. It hasn't always been a top five contender though, as the MDX's score has fluctuated over the years, especially after the 2021 redesign due to software bugs and transmission tuning complaints. Many of these issues have been resolved and the MDX is once again considered to be among the most reliable luxury SUVs around. The infotainment has also undergone a recent updated for the 2025 model year which should resolve complaints by customers over the earlier system.
5. Porsche Cayenne
- 2025 Reliability Score: 67/100
- Model Years: 2019 on (Major update in 2024)
- Most Popular Trim: Base AWD
- Current Base MSRP:$89,900
The Porsche Cayenne proves that high-tech, high-performance SUVs can still be reliable. Porsche's high ranking here is partly attributable to the fact that the current model has been around since 2019, which has allowed for enough time to resolve potential issues. While 67/100 may seem low compared to the best performers here, it is an impressive result for a premium vehicle packed with cutting-edge tech. A refresh in 2024 introduced a number of updates which have further addressed minor customer complaints.
