The Cheapest SUVs You Can Buy in 2026 From $20,000 to Full Size
These SUVs beat their size-competitive rivals on price
Whether you need a city-friendly subcompact or an eight-seater SUV for your entire family, value is often a significant part of the purchasing decision. That's even more relevant in these times of record car and gas prices. Furthermore, not everyone needs an SUV with all the bells and whistles. For these reasons, we've looked at all the cheapest SUVs you can buy in every size segment in the U.S. in 2026. We've specifically focused on price, so only the cheapest trims of each model have been considered.
Cheapest Subcompact SUV: Hyundai Venue ($20,550)
The Hyundai Venue is the most affordable subcompact crossover in the country, starting at just $20,550 for the base SE. It's got a small 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing just 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque, so you won't be getting anywhere in a hurry. At 31 mpg combined, the Venue's annual EPA-estimated fuel costs come to $1,950, based on a mix of highway and city driving, 15,000 miles per year, and the average price of gas.
The Venue SE keeps it simple with cloth seats, an eight-inch touchscreen display, and manual air conditioning. Don't expect much rear-seat or cargo space, though. Crucially, it's affordable to buy and run, and you also benefit from Hyundai's excellent 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cheapest Compact SUV: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ($27,695)
Moving into the compact SUV segment, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the most affordable option, costing just $27,695 for the ES trim. It's got a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 152 hp and 184 lb-ft, paired with a CVT. As affordable SUVs go, it's respectfully refined and has the bonus of standard all-wheel drive, but 26 mpg combined isn't impressive at this level, resulting in annual fuel costs of $2,300.
The ES trim gets only the basics, such as a four-speaker sound system, an eight-inch touchscreen, single-zone automatic climate control, and fabric seats. The low price and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty are hard to beat, though.

Cheapest Mid-Size SUV: Kia Sorento ($32,390)
At $32,390, the base Kia Sorento LX is a capable and affordable SUV. It's also one of the cheapest three-row crossovers on sale, with the ability to seat up to seven occupants. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, so it does feel a bit sluggish when fully loaded with passengers and cargo. The eight-speed automatic transmission is smooth, but you can only get 26 mpg combined–there's a pricier turbo hybrid model that manages 37 mpg. For the standard front-wheel-drive model, expect annual fuel costs of $2,300.
Kia remains a value-focused brand, so even this cheap SUV doesn't feel too sparse. The Sorento LX gets LED projector headlights, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, smart cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. For around $3,000 more, the next trim level feels even more premium with its heated front seats and SynTex imitation leather upholstery.

Cheapest Full-Size SUV: Nissan Armada ($58,840)
The Nissan Armada is a rare full-size SUV for under $60,000, with the entry-level SV 4x2 model starting at $58,840. Like all other Armada trims, it has a 3.5-liter V6, with the SV producing 425 hp and 516 lb-ft. It can run on regular unleaded, too, which can save some money, although this is a large and heavy SUV, so the best it can do is 18 mpg. That equates to average annual fuel costs of $3,850, rising to over $4,000 if you opt for the 4x4 variant.
The Armada handles decently for its size and has a vast cargo area of 97.1 cubic feet with the back seats folded. The cheapest SV comes with tri-zone automatic climate control, front/rear parking sensors, a 12.3-inch touchscreen interface, power-adjustable front seats, and a six-speaker sound system. It's one of the best affordable SUV models in the full-size class, with American rivals generally costing several thousand more.

Bonus: The Cheapest SUVs By Powertrain
If your high-value SUV of choice is guided by powertrain type rather than size, these are the most affordable models you can buy with gas, hybrid, and electric powertrains.
Cheapest Gas-Powered SUV
The Venue is not only the cheapest new SUV, but also the most affordable SUV without electrification of any kind. For long-term reliability, this makes the Hyundai a strong bet.
Cheapest Hybrid SUV
If you're after an SUV with better economy, the Kia Nio Hybrid is one of the best cheap SUVs you can buy at $27,390. That gets you the LX model, which has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor combining for 139 hp and 195 lb-ft. It's not nearly as potent as most modern hybrids, but it gets a remarkable 53 mpg combined-making it the most efficient SUV on sale-with annual gas costs of just $1,150.
Cheapest Electric SUV
Finally, for EV fans, there's the latest Chevy Bolt. At $27,600, it undercuts the only other electric SUV at this price point, which is the Nissan Leaf. The Bolt produces 210 hp from a single electric motor and has a 262-mile range on a full charge. It's pleasant to drive and the cheapest way to buy a new electric SUV.

Final Thoughts
There are more SUV choices than any other body style in the U.S. auto market, so an affordable option is out there for anyone willing to forgo some nice-to-have features. These vehicles offer more space than an equivalent sedan but keep the price reasonably low, with the main sacrifice being a lack of power below the full-size segment. If you do a lot of driving, though, it's worth considering spending more on a hybrid, as the gas savings may eventually be worth more than the initially higher price.
