Walgreens at Fowler and Shields in Fresno closes

The Walgreens store at Fowler and Shields avenues in east-central Fresno closed earlier this month after six years in operation.

It wasn’t easy to close the location, Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said.

But Walgreens announced some time ago it would close underperforming stores across the country, including this one, he said. The company is not focusing on any particular area and the closures are staggered over time, he added.

The location was scheduled to shut down July 7.

The store’s prescription records have been forwarded to either the Walgreens at Shaw and Fowler avenues or the one at Clovis Avenue and Kings Canyon Road, depending on the address on file, Caruso said. Patients will receive a letter letting them know which to store their records have been transferred.

“Customers don’t need to take any action; that transfer will be automatic,” he said.

While Caruso could not say how many employees worked at the Fowler and Shields location, he said a store of its size would have about 15 to 20 employees. Most of the store’s employees will be placed at other Walgreens in the area, he said.
