Word on the Street: Wacky plants for sale at Fresno nursery
What happens when you combine a local nursery with a man who has a sense of humor?
You get some wacky plants for sale.
Belmont Nursery is selling a plant called Ketchup ‘n’ Fries and dwarf grapevines that can be grown on tiny trellises.
Nursery owner Jon Reelhorn didn’t create them, but says his business seeks out the oddball plants and is probably the only place in town you’ll find these two.
The Ketchup ‘n’ Fries plant is a tomato and potato plant grafted together so that cherry tomatoes grow on the vine above ground and potatoes grow below ground.
Then there’s Pixie grapes, a line of dwarf grapevines that grow dozens of miniature grape clusters on vines that grow 1- 2 feet tall. They come in four varieties: Cabernet Franc, Pinot Meunier Purple, Pinot Meunier White and Riesling. They can be grown indoors in pots or in the ground outside.
“You could say we have ‘grape expectations’ about being able to offer these distinctively different miniature grape varieties,” Reelhorn said.
Both cost about $25 and are available at Belmont Nursery, 7730 E. Belmont Ave., and at the Friday Night Farmers Market in Clovis.
