15 farmworkers claim they’re owed thousands by labor contractor, farmer

A farm labor contractor from Madera and a Selma farmer are being sued by California Rural Legal Assistance, which claims they failed to pay 15 farmworkers for work they did.

The lawsuit, filed recently in federal court, alleges that Rafael Villafan, the contractor, and Sangha Sundip Singh, a raisin farmer, owe the workers between $2,000 and $9,000 each, including penalties, for harvesting grapes Sept. 11-15, 2015.

The CRLA is working with a private law firm, Miles, Sears & Eanni, to represent the workers.

Neither Singh nor Villafan could be reached for comment.
