You wouldn't think there would be much innovation in the world of composting. The folks at Midwest Bio Systems want to change that.

The company, based in Tampico, Illinois, brought its uniquely designed equipment to the World Ag Expo.

Its compost turner sports steel paddles aligned along a long, thick steel drum. The paddles are angled to flip composting material. Small jets apply water to the mixture.

Compost dries faster and breaks down quicker, giving the user a better product, Midwest Bio Systems says. As proof, a salesman for the company asked a visitor to take a whiff into a small plastic bag of compost.

It smelled just like dirt.
