Tributes pour in for Central Valley icon John Harris

Several members of the community shared their thoughts on social media about pioneering farmer John Harris who died Wednesday at 81

Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno: “John Harris was a respected leader in California and American agriculture. In the San Joaquin Valley, people recognized that John Harris made a difference in numerous ways. A proud graduate of UC Davis, he always understood the importance of education and gave back generously whether through his support of Fresno State’s Maddy Institute or mentoring the next generation of agricultural leaders. John was a pioneer in the development and production of healthy food products that made the Harris Ranch Beef one of the most respected food producers in America. His love of horses and agriculture defined his life. I had the good fortune to know John for over 40 years - he was my friend; he will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on forever.”

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my dear friend, John Harris. John was a true pioneer in the Central Valley, his vision and leadership helped make Harris Ranch a household name, known far beyond our region. More than that, he was a kind, generous man who cared deeply about his community.”

Sen. Shannon Grove, R-Bakersfield: “I am heartbroken to hear that John Harris of Harris Ranch has passed away. He was an icon, a true entrepreneur, and a legend. John built Harris Ranch into a top name in beef and horse racing with his big ideas and hard work. His legacy will live on. Rest in peace, John.”

Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval: “John Harris embodied the spirit and promise of the Valley. His dedication to agriculture, his visionary leadership, and his unwavering commitment to our region’s future have left a profound legacy that will continue to shape generations. At Fresno State, we are deeply grateful for his steadfast support of our students and his belief in the transformative power of education. On behalf of our campus community, I extend my deepest condolences to the Harris family as we honor a life defined by purpose, generosity, and service.”

Christina Estrada, CEO of The Big Fresno Fair: “John’s smile at the racetrack is something I’ll never forget. There was a spark in him when he was at our Fair – he truly came to life there. And that was before his horse even won! He was driven by an unwavering passion for agriculture and the Central Valley – whether ranching, farming or raising California Thoroughbreds. John Harris was respected by so many and formed lifelong connections at The Big Fresno Fair. His presence, his passion and his legacy will always be a part of this place.”
