If experiencing the electric rhythm of the Southern Caribbean at its most culturally vibrant time of year - Carnaval season - is on your travel bucket list, Carnival Cruise Line has the perfect cruise itinerary for you.

The chance to escape the cold and warm up on tropical island beaches isn't the only reason why travelers flock to the Caribbean during the winter. Across the region, Carnaval season enlivens the islands with weeks of colorful parades, street parties, and joyful celebrations rooted in rich customs, folklore, and a spirit of freedom.

When European colonizers brought their exclusive pre-Lenten masquerades to the islands, enslaved Africans infused their own traditions, music, and storytelling into Carnaval as a form of rebellion against their oppressors. When slavery ended in the region, Carnaval transformed into lively celebrations of resilience, heritage, and creativity that invite all to bask in the joy of life.

Today, islands throughout the Caribbean welcome people from around the world to join the vibrant cultural festivities and experience the collective joy of Carnaval. And in 2028, you can catch the spirit of Caribbean Carnaval on a curated Carnival cruise.

Most Southern Caribbean cruises give you a taste of the region's farther-flung islands over seven or eight days. Carnival Cruise Line's 14-day Carnival Journeys sailing on Carnival Firenze takes a different approach, offering a deep dive into the region right in the middle of the high-spirited Carnaval season.

Carnival Firenze to sail 14-day Caribbean Carnaval cruise in 2028

Departing from Port Canaveral, Florida on Feb. 20, 2028, Carnival's Caribbean Carnaval cruise will visit eight destinations in the Caribbean: St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominica, and Guadeloupe.

Carnival Journeys sailings are known for going further than the typical itinerary and this one leans into that with a Caribbean Carnaval theme that adds even more depth to the voyage. Each island has its own unique version of Carnaval, and passengers will have the chance to experience several distinct takes on it over the course of a single sailing.

The itinerary's biggest draw is its last four ports: Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominica, and Guadeloupe. Those port days fall right at the height of Carnaval celebrations in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday with a visit to Guadeloupe scheduled during closing events on Ash Wednesday.

Trinidad's Carnival, known as the "Greatest Show on Earth," is widely considered the most spectacular cultural experience in the Caribbean, and Carnival Firenze will be in port as thousands of masqueraders flood the streets of Port of Spain on Carnival Monday.

Cruise travelers can also sail to Trinidad's grand show on the Epic Carnival Experience charter cruise that sails to Trinidad on a Royal Caribbean ship.

"Planning Trinidad's Carnival can feel overwhelming - securing accommodations, arranging transportation to the Savannah and figuring out which fetes are worth your time is practically a full-time job, especially for first-timers. Epic Carnival Experience removes that stress entirely, delivering a seamless, curated experience both at sea and on land," Mykal Bayne wrote about the charter cruise in TimeOut Caribbean.

Carnival Firenze will offer its own Carnevale flair

One of Carnival's unique Italian-style ships that came from sister cruise line Costa Cruises, Carnival Firenze will give passengers a sense of being in Italy for Carnevale celebrations while on board with its spaces inspired by Florentine landmarks. The special sailing will layer Caribbean Carnaval-themed programming on top of Firenze's Italian-inspired experiences and entertainment like Festa Italiana, Carnival's version of an Italian street party.

The special Carnival Journeys sailing will also create a Caribbean Carnaval festival atmosphere on board with themed deck parties, live music, dance classes, and special cultural experiences. To further enrich the experience, passengers will be able to attend presentations where guest speakers dive into the traditions and history behind Carnaval in the region.

For travelers who want a Caribbean cruise that feels like more than a string of beach days, this Carnival Journeys sailing offers something meaningful and different: a chance to follow the Carnaval season across multiple islands, and then bring the celebration back on board each night.

Ahead of its Caribbean Carnaval sailing in 2028, Carnival Firenze will sail South America cruises in winter 2027, visiting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the first day of the world-famous Brazilian Carnaval.
