Man overboard on Norwegian cruise; Carnival reacts to data breach claim

Just a week after a Carnival cruise in Australia was rocked by a man overboard incident, a Norwegian cruise sailing from the U.S. sadly faced a similar situation, leading to an hours-long search at sea.

Most of these tragic cases that occasionally shake cruise vacations are determined to be intentional acts where a passenger or crew member jumps overboard, rather than an instance of someone accidentally falling from the ship into the sea.

Although cruise ships have systems in place to respond quickly and immediately launch a search for an overboard individual, the outcome usually isn't good. Fewer than 30% of overboard searches result in a successful rescue, according to a study conducted by the Cruise Lines International Association.

The fact that man overboard incidents often occur late at night - like the latest one that occurred on board a Norwegian cruise ship - can decrease the likelihood of rescue since limited visibility makes locating the overboard individual more challenging.

Doug Parker shared more details on the man overboard incident on a Norwegian cruise ship sailing from Boston, Carnival's response to a potential data breach, and more cruise news, on the April 27 edition of Cruise News Today.

Cruise News Today Transcript:

Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.

Good morning, here's your cruise news for Monday, April 27th.

A man overboard triggered a late-night search at sea delaying a cruise ship's arrival and next-day departure out of Boston. Norwegian Breakaway remained at sea for several hours late Saturday night and into early Sunday after a crew member went overboard just east of Cape Cod.

Onboard announcement recording: "Sadly, a member of our crew climbed over the railing and fell into the water."

Now, Norwegian Cruise Line told Cruise News Today, quote: "Upon confirming the incident, the vessel immediately informed the United States Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Center and a coordinated search and rescue operation was initiated," unquote.

After several hours of searching with the U.S. Coast Guard, the ship resumed course and arrived in Boston late the next day, delaying the following sailing.

This is the fifth man overboard this year following one last weekend aboard Carnival Splendor.

Carnival Corporation responds to hacking group's data breach claim

And Carnival Corporation is responding to reports of a possible data breach involving a well-known hacking group. Yeah, the group known as ShinyHunters claims it accessed company data and issued a ransom demand.

In a statement, Carnival Corporation says it detected unauthorized activity tied to a single user account, shut it down, and notified law enforcement. The company says it is still reviewing the situation and warns that online claims may not be accurate.

Some reports suggest millions of records could be involved, but Carnival has not confirmed that. Officials say impacted customers will be notified if personal data is found to be compromised.

New Carnival cruise ship to homeport in Galveston, Texas

And finally, Carnival Cruise Line is adding another ship to its Texas lineup.

Carnival President Christine Duffy: "She is a sister ship to Jubilee, but she'll have some differences."

The cruise line revealed its new ship Carnival Tropicale will homeport in Galveston starting in 2028. The new Excel-class ship will feature a redesigned top deck replacing the BOLT roller coaster with a new multi-level water park and entertainment zone.

Carnival says the move strengthens its long-standing ties to Texas where it has been expanding for more than two decades. Tropicale will join Carnival Jubilee in Texas.
