Orloff Jewelers in Fig Garden Village is gearing up for big changes, including a temporary move and an expansion.

The jewelry store at Palm and Shaw avenues is adding 2,000 square feet. It’s taking over the empty space next door that was once occupied by luxury women’s clothing store La Rouge, next to Patrick James clothing store. (La Rouge moved to Villaggio shopping center on Nees Avenue.)

The new Orloff space will be a watch boutique carrying new lines of watches.

It will also feature a coffee bar where customers can relax in the lounge or take their drinks to sip while they shop, said Kathleen Price, Orloff’s director of operations and business development.

“We have third-generation shoppers that come in, not only to shop but to say hello to the Orloffs. It’s not only a buying experience,” she said.

Orloff Jewelers turned 70 last year.

The company was started by Paul Orloff as Paul Orloff Diamond Company. James and Mary Ann Orloff took over in 1990. Jeweler Maxwell Orloff is positioned to lead the company in the future.

Moving and closing temporarily

But before the store expands, it needs to remodel its future space. While it does that, it will move temporarily into the former Wells Fargo building next door.

That move will happen in mid-May and will last until about November.

Orloff has hired a firm from Switzerland experienced in high-end jewelry stores and boutiques to handle the changes.

“It is really something that’s going to be a substantial shot in the arm for Fig Garden Village,” Price said.

A remodeling sale will start May 1 to clear out inventory before the move with merchandise up to 60% off.

Orloff has a history of locating in prime locations in Fresno throughout the decades. After starting on Tulare Street, it moved to Fulton Mall in 1968 and was renamed Prince Orloff Crown Jewels.

A second location then opened in Manchester Mall.

By 1982, the store had moved to Fig Garden Village and was operating under the name Orloff Jewelers. It moved into its current space (the former Warner Co. Jewelers spot) 15 years ago.

Fig Garden Village

The expansion is one of a few changes since CenterCal Properties bought the Fig Garden Village in May of last year.

The Vault Fine Jewelers, near CVS, closed late last year. Uncle Harry’s New York Bagelry & Coffeehouse returned to the center in July of last year.
