The Foods Co. on West Shaw Avenue is closing.
The grocery store next to Kohl’s between Brawley and Marty avenues is scheduled to shut down in mid-March.
No exact date has been set, according to a spokesperson from Foods Co.’s parent company, The Kroger Co., which also owns Ralphs, some Food 4 Less stores and other supermarkets.
He did not say why the store is closing.
But Kroger is in the process of closing 60 underperforming stores nationwide.
The Cincinnati-based grocery store is considered the largest traditional grocer nationwide. In June, it announced plans to close the 60 stores over the next 18 months.
The company still has two other Foods Co. stores in Fresno, and several more in the central San Joaquin Valley.
Employees will be given the chance to transfer to another store.
The spokesperson did not say if any additional local Foods Co. stores would close.
“We are equally dedicated to continuing to provide our customers with fresh, affordable food at our other FoodsCo locations,” he said in an email.
The Food 4 Less stores in the Fresno area are owned by a separate company.
The Foods Co. on West Shaw faces heavy competition nearby. Within a 1.6-mile stretch are a Grocery Outlet, Winco, Costco, FoodMaxx, Smart & Final Extra!, Target and Walmart.
However, Foods Co. carries many Mexican and Latin American foods that other grocer stores don’t.
