What makes a restaurant romantic?
A cozy booth, a dark place with a candle (a real flame, none of this LED stuff) and a quiet place to whisper with the person you’re in love with.
And of course, excellent food. This goes for Valentine’s Day or any night.
As the reporter who’s covered the Fresno restaurant scene for years, that is hard to find in this town. No shade toward today’s restaurants, it’s just that the trend is all hard surfaces and loud, echoing open rooms now.
But you can still get a romantic meal in this town. Here are five locally owned restaurants that fit the description, in no particular order.
5 romantic restaurants
L’Aperitif Bistro
L’Aperitif is a French, Italian and generally international restaurant at Herndon and Cedar avenues that has the vibes of a romantic spot: booths where you can sit hip-to-hip with your sweetie, plenty of wine and cocktails, and a volume suitable for quiet conversation.
Chef Thomas Nouantanouvanh was born in Laos, raised in France and has worked all over the world.
It shows on his menu. You can get paella, escargot, a Tomahawk steak, creamy pasta made with miso and white wine, and all kinds of seafood. Yelp.com ranked it the No. 1 Italian restaurant in Fresno in 2021 based on its reviews.
Reservations recommended.
Details: L’Aperitif is at 6650 N. Cedar Ave. 559-472-3824.
Trelio
Trelio is a longtime favorite in Old Town Clovis for a reason. It’s intimate. It’s got great food and excellent wine.
You’ll want a reservation because this place is little, although it does expand into a charming plant-filled breezeway.
For now, Trelio is serving an $80 prix fixe (fixed price) $80 five-course meal, with choices ranging from wagyu steak poivre to a chickpea ragout for the main entree. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan diets are “happily accommodated” if customers call ahead.
Its wine program has won numerous awards over the years, including the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 2025. Whether you’re a wine aficionado or not, all the servers here are sommeliers and can walk you through what to get.
Details: Trelio is at 438 Clovis Ave. 559-297-0783.
Richard’s Prime Rib & Seafood
Perhaps the king of old-school style in Fresno, Richard’s on Belmont Avenue near downtown has been around since 1969.
It’s got a neon sign, raspy voiced waitresses, naked lady paintings on the wall, and a crème brûlée that’s a joy to crack with a spoon.
The menu hasn’t changed much over the decades. As founder Richard Stockle loved to say, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”
As the restaurant’s name implies, it has prime rib and seafood, along with steak, oysters, lamb, and sides such as rice pilaf and mashed potato.
There’s a full bar with cocktails, wine and beer.
Details: Richard’s is at 1609 E. Belmont Ave. 559-266-4077.
Willow Osteria
Switching gears to the new and modern, Willow Osteria in Clovis makes the list for its atmosphere and food.
The newest restaurant from hometown chef Jimmy Pardini of The Annex Kitchen and Annesso Pizzeria, Willow Osteria (oh-steh-ree-uh) opened late last year at the southeast corner of Willow and Shepherd avenues.
Take your partner here and you’ll get points for choosing one of the newest, trendiest places in town.
Reviewers online call Willow gorgeous, beautiful and chic. And the patio with twinkly lights and olive trees definitely has a romantic vibe.
But there’s also something sensual about dining on this kind of food. There’s grilled bread served with olive oil, for example, and lots of pasta: squid ink linguine, fusilli in a spicy pink sauce and wild boar lasagna.
There are also plenty of cocktails, wine, beer and zero-proof drinks on the menu.
Details: 1965 N. Willow Ave., Clovis. 559-708-4343.
13 Prime Steak
Another one for the modern category, 13 Prime Steak in Clovis is upscale, swanky and a good place to take a date you want to impress.
At the northeast corner of Willow and Nees avenues, the locally owned steak house has a dining room that’s something different for the Fresno area. Creative lighting squiggles across the ceiling and giant feathery fixtures descend from it, everything bathed in a blue glow.
If steak is your thing, this is a good place to get it. There are numerous options on the menu, including a 42-ounce prime Harris Ranch porterhouse for $120.
You’ll also find lobster, salads, pasta and more.
The restaurant also is known for its cocktails, with a changing seasonal drink menu with twists on old favorites.
Details: 13 Prime Steak is at 1345 N Willow Ave., suite 190, Clovis. 559-216-1313.
