A sushi restaurant in Clovis brings a new concept, but familiar names behind it

A new sushi restaurant is opening in Clovis, but it’s a little different than your standard sushi spot.

Sushi Box is scheduled to open to the public Dec. 5 at the corner of Herndon and Fowler avenues, next to the Five Guys burger restaurant.

Although there are some familiar faces behind the restaurant, it’s not like many other sushi restaurants in town.

It’s not the traditional experience where customers sit down and order a plate with six to eight sushi rolls on it from a server. Instead, customers order sushi by the piece from a display case, building a “box” of their favorites.

Customers can still watch the sushi being made, and the case is replenished with fresh sushi throughout the day.

It’s grab-and-go, quick-service style of sushi. It can be purchased to go, or eaten in the cafe-style seating or on the patio.

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and until 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sushi Box is supported by the Lin Restaurant Group and is a partner restaurant to the other eateries in the group.

The new restaurant is in what used to be Rollie Rollie Thai Rolled Ice Cream, a concept that Jason Lin, head of the company, closed a few years back.

His company is behind Lin’s Fusion, the buffet restaurant on Blackstone Avenue that was founded by his parents. It also runs several others in River Park and Campus Pointe near Fresno State.

Campus Pointe recently brought shabu shabu — the Japanese version of hot pot — to central Fresno with the opening of Ichi Shabu.

Also at Campus Pointe, the family-run company owns teppenyaki restaurant Hino Oishi, which will soon move to a new larger, building under construction nearby.

Other restaurants by the company include Spicy J’s Specialty Chinese Cuisine, J-Pot Mini Hot Pot & Bar and the J-Tea boba shop inside it at River Park.

It also owns both Ramen Hayashi locations.
