You know how Fresnans like to tout that we can drive three hours and be in the mountains or at the coast?

Well, the same thing applies to some of the best restaurants in the world — the ones that have been awarded the coveted Michelin stars.

We don’t have any in Fresno (not even The Elderberry House in Oakhurst has a Michelin star, though it does have a Forbes four-star rating).

But we do have 10 restaurants with Michelin stars in less than a three-hour drive from Fresno.

So if you’re looking for extremely top-notch dining (and not even Rainbird in Merced or L’Aperitif in Fresno or The Vintage Press in Visalia will do), check out these restaurants that you can make a daytrip or a weekend out of. And if you’re willing to drive a little farther, there’s a whopping 25 Michelin-starred restaurants in San Francisco and even more in Los Angeles.

Note that reservations are essentially required. And most meals are prix fixe tasting menus (literally translating to “fixed price”). Instead of choosing off a menu, you are served a set multi-course meal. Most restaurants charge a mandatory 20% tip on top of the price of that meal. Prices listed are per person.

The restaurants all have optional wine pairings where wines have been chosen to fit each course, usually for $100 or more per person.

Call ahead if you have dietary restrictions.

Paso Robles

If you’ve ever been wine tasting at JUSTIN Vineyards west of Paso Robles, the estate with the rolling green hills has a restaurant with one Michelin Star. The Restaurant at JUSTIN also has a Michelin green star, the company’s sustainability award.

The restaurant has a multi-course tasting menu, an experience that lasts 2.5 hours. Many of its ingredients come from a farm on the property with edible flower fields and a 150-tree orchard.

Examples of dishes include an ocean trout tartare, squash tortellini with lamb belly and a fig-walnut torte.

The meal costs $225.

Six Test Kitchen, 1 star

In the industrial enclave of Tin City south of Paso Robles, Six Test Kitchen is a tiny restaurant serving a multi-course, small-plate tasting menu. It changes weekly and uses ingredients local to the central coast.

It seats 12 people at a time — two seatings per night — at a bar overlooking the kitchen so diners can watch the chefs in action.

Michelin praised Six’s aged pork loin paired with brown butter and a “stunning” burnt onion puree.

The meal costs $255. The restaurant does not accommodate vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free or dairy-free diets.

Sacramento

The Kitchen, 1 star

Dining at this 30-year-old restaurant is experiencing a show as much as it is a meal. Michelin describes The Kitchen as having a “raucous party atmosphere, led by energetic emcee.”

Guests are encouraged to wander into the kitchen at times and chat with the chefs. Customers are offered seconds of dishes they like. One guest was even invited to do the dishes (he declined).

The six-course tasting menu uses local or regional ingredients and costs $195. Wine, cocktail and alcohol-free pairings are available.

Past menus have included a butter-basted lamb loin and the scallops Michelin said were “perfectly seared” with cauliflower, blood orange and lime leaf.

Localis, 1 star

In addition to the restaurant’s Michelin star, chef Chris Barnum-Dann also won the 2025 Michelin Guide California Sommelier Award for his wine expertise.

An electrician and musician turned chef, Barnum-Dann and his wife run the small Localis. It has a cozy, quiet dining area. The chef’s counter is recommended seating for people who want to interact with the chef and hear his inspiration behind the dishes.

The 10-course tasting menu features global cuisine with a California influence. While most ingredients are local, “mangoes from Belize in June are the best,” the website proclaims. Michelin says whimsy is a theme on the menu, for example in dishes such as the puffed pillow of crisp potato filled with “Fancy French Onion Dip” and caviar.

The meal costs $197. For an additional cost, a standard pairing is available with wine, beer, sake and more, and a “time and place” pairing draws from Localis’ wine cellar spanning decades. A non-alcoholic pairing is available too.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

This restaurant is dripping in awards — one of only two on this list with two Michelin stars — and is especially known for its wine. It has a 3,700-bottle wine cellar with undiscovered selections from around the world and California.

Michelin throws around words such as “luxury” and “refinement” when describing Aubergine.

Still, there are surprises, including its cabbage taco filled with shallot jam and caviar. Past menus have included rib-eye with sunflower miso and an artichoke tart with honeycomb.

The tasting menu is $285, or $350 if you want to dine at a 700-year-old redwood table in the private wine cellar.

Chez Noir, 1 star

To say this Chez Noir has a homey feel is an actual fact as it’s in a Craftsman home, with the couple who runs it living upstairs.

Seafood lovers, this one is for you. The restaurant has a coastal California-themed menu with options such as caviar funnel cake, grilled bluefin tuna, abalone and skate.

With both indoor and outdoor seating, the four-course meal costs $165 with optional add-ons.

Oakland

Commis, 2 stars

This sleek and modern restaurant sources its ingredients from Northern California. But its menu has hints of the chef’s Thai and Chinese heritage.

Commis is known for its signature slow-poached egg yolk on a bed of cream infused with onion and malt.

The 10-course tasting menu in the dining room costs $259. If you’re looking to spend a little less, go for a reservation in the bar with its four-course tasting menu for $109. Beverage pairings can be shared among two people in both locations.

Sun Moon Studio, 1 star

This tiny restaurant seats just 12 people, so its reservations are understandably hard to get.

Sun Moon’s seasonal menu focuses on California ingredients, letting them shine in their simplicity.

You may find Monterey bay spot prawns, Taiwanese sausage served on brioche bread or a kiwi sorbet.

Dinner is $180.

Palo Alto

Protege, 1 star

Calling itself “unpretentious“ and “upscale casual,” Protégé has two different kinds of dining.

The dining room serves a seven-course tasting menu for $250. You may find a nine-layer morel mushroom lasagna or smoked trout from Mount Lassen.

Or, choose from the individually priced menu in the lounge or at the bar, which has a view of the kitchen.

That menu requires at $100 deposit and includes options such as a $39 brick chicken that Michelin featured. It also has oyster and caviar appetizers and a dessert cart full of tarts and cookies.

Woodside

The Village Pub, 1 star

Just south of San Francisco, The Village Pub serves California cuisine influenced by the culinary traditions of France and the Mediterranean.

About 80% of its produce comes from an organic farm a few miles away in the Santa Cruz mountains. Expect summer melon salad, a dry-aged duck breast or the popular key lime tart adorned with flower petals.

Dinner at The Village Pub is $130, lunch is $65, and brunch is $85. Customers can add a course of caviar for between $130 and $200. Visitors can also dine in the The Pub and choose from a menu with options ranging from $10 to $49.
