El Super opens its 2nd Hispanic grocery store in Fresno. Get a first look inside

Inside Look is a Fresno Bee series where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.

El Super opened its second grocery store in Fresno Wednesday, introducing its Latin American supermarket to the central part of the city.

The store is in the former Sears just north of Manchester Center near Blackstone and Shields avenues.

The supermarket has a bakery carrying pan dulce, a tortillería making fresh tortillas, meat and seafood departments, and more — including a quick-service restaurant.

For years, Fresno has had an El Super in southeast Fresno, at Tulare Avenue and First Street.

Competitor Vallarta Supermarkets is perhaps more well known in the area with its four stores. That includes the Clovis store that opened last fall.

The new El Super by Manchester will employ about 140 people. Regular store hours are 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.

It’s the 70th store under that name, with locations in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Its parent company, Chedraui USA, owns more than 380 grocery stores, including El Super, Fiesta Mart and Smart & Final supermarkets.
