Downtown Fresno has a hopping brewery scene — and now the bar scene is picking up speed too.

Several new bars are opening — including a sober bar — and the former Full Circle Brewing Co. is a home to a new music venue with a bar. One new bar has a restaurant known for its tri-tip sandwiches.

Here’s a look at what’s happening on the bar scene in downtown Fresno.

Neat & Noir/The Basement

Remember Saint J?

The cozy downtown wine bar in the Peerless Building at Broadway and Amador streets closed, but it has a new owner and has reopened as a cocktail bar called Neat & Noir.

It’s been bought by Eric Santos. He had originally wanted to make it a coffee shop during the day and a bar at night, but regulations don’t allow that. So the cocktail lounge will focus on coffee-based cocktails instead. Think espresso martinis and mocktails on the weekends.

There will be wine, but no beer (as a courtesy to nearby South of Shaw Beer Co., though the beer pub’s customers can bring South of Shaw’s pizza into Neat & Noir).

Neat & Noir has a bright, modern vibe.

At 1755 Broadway St., it will be open 5 p.m to midnight Thursdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.

Santos also owns The Basement, a bar that’s in the works in the basement of the Sun Stereo Warehouse building on Fulton Street. It’s taking a little longer than expected to get financing for renovations due to inflation, tariffs and other hiccups. He still plans to open it — or possibly sell the concept.

Lumiere Sober Bar

Downtown Fresno now has a sober bar inside the Sun Stereo Warehouse building at 736 Fulton St.

Lumiere Sober Bar doesn’t serve alcohol, but the drinks will give you a little buzz. That’s because they’re “adaptogenic” and “nootropic” — plant-powered drinks that help the body naturally respond to stress and enhance cognition.

They won’t get you drunk though.

They’re the type of drinks you might reach for when looking to unwind but don’t want a glass of wine, said owner Joy Alvarado.

“You don’t really need a drink; you need something that’s going to take away your stress, that’s going to enhance your mood,” she said.

Alvarado first made adaptogenic cocktails at Joy’s Velita’s, the neighboring candle-making workshop business she still runs next door. The drinks got popular, so she decided to open Lumiere.

The bar is open by reservation only via its website (though walk-ins are welcome when people with reservations have already opened it up). The experience costs $25 a person, which gets you two drink tickets in the form of marbles.

Cans, bottles and cases can also be purchased to take home.

Sanctuary

The former Full Circle Brewing Co. at 702 Fulton St. closed at the end of last year, consolidating its business into its original Chinatown location on F Street.

Since then, Sanctuary has taken over the space as a concert venue. It’s working on getting its liquor license and is not officially open yet.

But when it is, it will host concerts, serve alcohol and eventually food with a small kitchen that’s in the works.

“We really just want to have a professional-grade concert venue for the Valley,” said Tully Huffaker, CEO of the Sanctuary corporation, run by a group of musicians and promoters.

The venue seats 230 indoors and can also host events on its outdoor patio. The interior has been revamped with a new stage, a green room for performers and sound equipment. A kitchen with simple bar food is in the long-term plans.

Huffaker, a promoter, is a Live Nation partner, meaning he can bring high-profile acts to his venue. He also runs Cumbiatron, a touring cumbia dance party.

“We’ll be doing rock bands, ‘souldies’ (low rider, freestyle music), DJ nights, house music, techno, stuff like that, bandas, all types of stuff,” he said.

It will be open for only events, not regular hours like a bar.

The Cave

If you want some food to go with all those drinks, The Cave has both.

The restaurant and bar is in the front of the Sun Stereo Warehouse building at 736 Fulton St., across the street from the Tioga-Sequoia Beer Garden.

The Cave has a limited menu with burgers, chicken and beef kebabs, wraps, wings and more. It’s perhaps most known for its $10 tri-tip sandwiches.

It’s also has a full bar. Cocktails include a selection of $7.50 specials, such as a tequila sunrise and a rum punch.

Hours: The Cave is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays and from noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.

The Layover

Travel-themed pub The Layover opened last year, but got its liquor license and ramped up live shows just a few months ago.

It’s in the former Peeve’s Public House at 1243 Fulton St.

The pub has been hosting lots of live music, including rock and indie rock shows, along with jazz every other Tuesday, karaoke on Thursdays and retro movie nights alternating with trivia nights on Wednesdays. Check its website for the schedule.

The Layover now has a full bar with beer on tap. Owner Miguel Martinez said a customer favorite is Busy Bee honey ale from downtown brewer Procreations Brewing Co.

There are also cocktails, including a house Greyhound and a Fresno version of the Singapore Sling (a drink former downtown bar Tokyo Gardens was known for).

“If you go someplace else and order that, it’s a completely different drink,” Martinez said. “They just kinda asked what color it was and they made up their own drink.”

So The Layover recreated Tokyo Gardens version and sells it at the pub.

The Stage Depot Whiskey Lounge

It’s been nearly three years since The Bee announced plans for The Stage Depot Whiskey Lounge at the corner of Fulton and Mono streets, near Modernist craft cocktail bar.

An image of three-day notice to pay rent or quit made the rounds on Facebook, leading many to wonder if the project would ever happen.

But both the landlord and business owner say the whiskey bar is coming.

The Stage Depot has its liquor license, and they say the project has building permits. The rent is paid. They’re just looking for investors to move the project forward, said Stage Depot owner Pete Hernandez.

“It is still something that we’re pushing forward and we’re working hard on getting it done,” he said. “It’s not easy opening something up.”
