What’s under construction in this busy north Fresno shopping center?
A new building is going up quickly on Friant Road at Park Crossing, the busy shopping center that’s home to Trader Joe’s and Heirloom restaurant in north Fresno.
The 12,000-square-foot building is just east of Annesso Pizzeria.
It will house a mix of retail stores and restaurants, said Harold Zinkin, a partner in Zinkin Family Partners, the developers and owners of the center and others around the city.
The building is about half leased and will come with more parking spaces, he said. If all goes as planned, the businesses could open in August.
So what stores or restaurants are moving in there?
He’s not saying just yet.
The only business that’s gone public about signing a lease so far is Noble Credit Union at 8492 N. Friant Ave., according to an announcement from real estate firm Newmark Pearson Commercial, a division of Pearson Realty.
But the rest of the shopping center has added several new businesses in recent months, including a national ice cream shop, an indoor golf simulator with a restaurant and bar, and a mattress store.
Ice cream, golf restaurant, bar and more
Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream opened last fall near Trader Joe’s. The ice cream is made on site, with the menu rotating through more than 45 flavors, according to a Fresno Bee story at the time.
National Geographic named Handel’s its No. 1 ice cream in its “The 10 Best of Everything” book in 2006.
The franchise has more than 125 corporate and franchised locations across the United States.
Another business, The Fairway Lounge, is an indoor golf simulator that opened last month with a full bar and restaurant.
Next to Trader Joe’s, the locally owned business has six bays where players can hit golf balls on 250 real courses that are simulated on screens in front of them. High-speed cameras track the balls as though people were actually playing on the course of their choice.
The business also has a restaurant and bar that people can visit without doing any golfing.
It serves sandwiches, salads and shareable entrees, including the popular sliders and french fries shaped like divots.
The Fairway has a craft cocktail menu created by a consultant from Los Angeles. It includes golf-themed cocktails, such as the Caddie margarita. Watching it being made is a show in itself, as its made with dry ice and Grand Marnier cold foam.
Also in the shopping center, a Christian’s Mattress Xpress recently opened selling all kinds of mattresses.
The shopping center will continue to grow, Zinkin said, even at a time when many restaurants and retailers are scaling back expansion plans.
“It is due to the demand we’re having in the shopping center at Park Crossing,” he said. “We’re having more tenant interest than space available.”
