The Fresno Joann fabric store in the River Park area is one of 500 stores headed for closure nationwide.

The retailer at Blackstone and Nees avenues, known for sewing and craft supplies, initially survived two rounds of bankruptcy, including one last month.

But this week, the Fresno location appeared on a list of 61 stores in California slated for closure in a bankruptcy court filing, reported multiple news sources, including Fast Company. An employee at the Fresno store confirmed the coming closure and said the store did not have a set date.

Stores in Sacramento, Salinas, Bakersfield, Folsom, Citrus Heights and Stockon were also on the closure list.

The Clovis Joann store is not slated to close.

The fabric store — one of the last in town besides Hobby Lobby and locally owned stores — has faced months of challenges.

Joann filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 with $1 billion in debt and went private. It later closed several stores before filing for bankruptcy last month. This week, it confirmed plans to close 500 of its 850 stores.

The Joann store in Fresno shares a parking with Chick-Fil-A and In-N-Out, two fast-food restaurants with hugely popular drive-thrus.
