Two new smashburger spots open — a popular favorite in Clovis and a newbie in Fresno
The smashburger trend is smashing it in Fresno and Clovis.
Forgive our pun, but two new restaurants have opened in what is the latest food trend to hit the area. Local favorite Hammy’s Smash Burgers opened its first Clovis location, and newcomer Smash’N Burgers has opened in central Fresno.
Both serve the hamburger patties pressed thin and crispy with lacy edges. Both have limited menus, with the option to stack patties two or three high and smothered in cheese and their own sauce. And both have french fries with various cheesy and meaty toppings.
Hammy’s is at 393 W. Shaw Ave., in the former CHICK N’ BROS spot in front of Walmart (in a move that clearly demonstrates the fried chicken trend cooling and the smashburger trend heating up). It opened at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30.
The business opened its first location on West Shaw Avenue near Costco in Fresno in October 2022. It got such an enthusiastic following that barely a year later owner Hamzah “Hammy” Ahmed decided to open two more restaurants.
In addition to Clovis, he will also open a Hammy’s in the former Pita Grill spot at First Street and Shaw Avenue, near Fashion Fair mall. That is scheduled to open in the coming months.
Burger toppings include grilled onions, jalapeños, bacon and onion rings.
Smash’N Burgers
The newcomer in the smashburger world is Smash’N Burgers at 3085 E. Shields Ave., next to Foods Co. at the northwest corner of Shields and First Street.
It opened about two weeks ago doing mostly takeout.
In addition to the traditional smashburgers, it has a pastrami burger. It sells ice cream, too.
Smash’N Burgers is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
The two new restaurants join food truck Gator’s Smash Burgers. You can find it at Copper Avenue and Friant Road 2-8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.
Yet another smashburger restaurant, Smash Bros Bistro, is in the works at the northeast corner of Bullard Avenue and Fresno Street. The owners hope to open in February.
