A new restaurant chain is moving into the old Marie Callender’s on Blackstone in Fresno
Three years ago, both Marie Callender’s restaurants in Fresno closed abruptly.
One – at Cedar and Shaw avenues – has fully reopened. The other – across the street from River Park and just south of Nees Avenue – has been empty ever since.
Now a new restaurant is coming to the spot.
California Fish Grill confirmed it plans to take over part of the building.
A sustainably-sourced seafood restaurant, California Fish Grill is based in California and has about three dozen locations in the state. It also has a handful of restaurants in the Las Vegas and Phoenix areas.
The closest to Fresno is the Visalia location, which opened in 2020 on Mooney Boulevard. It also has two restaurants in the Sacramento area.
A California Fish Grill representative said it plans to open in late November.
The restaurant touts its “responsibly sourced” seafood. It sells wild-caught and farm-raised seafood that is rated “best choice” or “good alternative” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program or is eco-certified by a third party.
The menu
The large menu features a variety of grilled fish served over rice, including salmon, tilapia, shrimp and delta catfish. It also has fried fish, including fried catfish and fish and chips.
It has bowls, including a poke bowl, and keto and paleo bowls.
Other food on the menu includes salads, fish tacos and sandwiches.
It also has four plant-based options, including “shrimp” and an “ahi” poke bowl.
Work on the building will start soon. According to permit applications filed with the City of Fresno, the restaurant plans to serve beer and wine and have a patio.
