PETA named a Fresno-based cookie baker in a national Top 10 list.

The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals released a Valentine’s Day-themed Top 10 Vegan Sweet Treats in the U.S. list Wednesday.

Jalen’s Bakery and its vegan chocolate chip cookies are on it.

The list was not ranked.

Longtime Fresno Bee readers may remember Carmen Kohlruss’s story about Jalen Bailey, who founded the bakery when he was 8 years old in 2016.

He was saving for a house for he and his single mom, “so me and my mommy could make more memories in the kitchen, so it could be a bigger kitchen, so I could bake more things.”

Now 14 (and still an honor roll student), Jalen is still baking cookies. Jalen’s Bakery sells the cookies, which PETA says are “fresh-baked and crispy on the outside with a satisfying soft center.” They are made with vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips.

You can buy his cookies online at JalensBakery.com. They’re available for local delivery and can be shipped. You can sometimes find them at Tower Blendz on Olive Avenue.

Jalen’s also sells a vegan pancake mix.

PETA’s list also included vegan red velvet pound cake, cinnamon rolls and a cashew cheesecake from dessert makers around the country.
