Fat Jack’s is closed, but this new Clovis burger restaurant is open in its spot

Fat Jack’s, the little 1950s-style diner on Shaw Avenue in Clovis, has closed. But a new restaurant with the same retro vibe has opened in its spot.

Bob’s Good Burger opened May 14 serving burgers, milkshakes and other fast food.

The owners of Fat Jack’s could not be reached to comment about why they closed. But the restaurant shut down over the summer, at a time when COVID-19 cases were spiking and many restaurants were reeling from restrictions that had them stopping and starting indoor dining.

Bob’s Good Burger kept the interior of the restaurant the same. All the Marilyn Monroe and Elvis images are still on the walls. The black and white checkerboard floor is still there and are so are the pink-topped tables.

And it plans to start car hop service soon, where you can order and eat without leaving your car. Flash your headlights to let them know you want car-side service.

Customers can also order at the walk-up window or eat inside too.

“A lot of people do want to want to sit (and eat) in their cars, especially now with COVID,” said Naz Saleh, whose family owns the restaurant.

So who’s Bob? No, it has nothing to do with the animated TV show Bob’s Burgers.

Bob is actually Saleh’s father, Abdul Saleh.

“It’s just kinda like a nickname,” he said.

The family owns other restaurants in the area, including Bob’s Drive-In in Lindsay and Jack’s Red Onion on Belmont Avenue near Fresno Chaffee Zoo.

The menu

The menu at Bob’s Good Burger isn’t that different from Fat Jack’s either – it’s just a lot bigger.

It has all the basic fast food burgers and sandwiches. More than 20, in fact, including burgers with double and triple patties. There are burgers piled high with pastrami, bacon, or avocado.

There are turkey patties, veggie patties and chicken options too, along with salads.

Family meals for big families are on the menu too, with six burgers, six fries and six sodas for $31.99, and a similar deal serving 15 for $75.49.

All kinds of fried goodies are available, including french fries and onion rings, but also fried okra, shrimp, and zucchini. There are also loaded fries topped with chili, cheese and pastrami.

Ice cream cones, milkshakes, sundaes and banana splits are on the menu for dessert.

Details: Bob’s Good Burger is at 625 W. Shaw Ave. Hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
