Taco Bell restaurants are shrinking their menus and Fresno is not happy about it
Could 2020 get any worse?
A global pandemic, murder hornets, a messy political season and now one more thing to add to the list: Taco Bell is shrinking its menu.
Yes, we know it’s not the end of the world.
But at a time when comfort food is king, losing the chance to indulge in a Mexican pizza just adds insult to injury. At least, that’s what folks on the internet are saying.
The not-quite-Mexican fast food chain already trimmed its menu once earlier this summer when it got rid of the grilled steak soft taco, spicy potato soft taco, nachos supreme, the mini skillet breakfast bowl, fiesta potatoes and quesarito.
Now it’s axing more items from the menu Nov. 5 in an effort to speed up ordering and make room “for future innovations.”
That means it’s saying goodbye to the Mexican pizza, which is beef and refried beans sandwiched between two tortillas and topped with “Mexican pizza sauce,” cheese and tomatoes.
The Mexican pizza’s end comes as the company works to make good on its promise of going greener.
“Removing it from our menus helps us work towards our commitment to leave a lighter footprint on our planet,” the company said. “Currently, Mexican Pizza packaging accounts for over 7 million pounds of paperboard material per year in the U.S.”
Taco Bell is also getting rid of pico de gallo and shredded chicken, meaning no more soft tacos or burritos with shredded chicken, and no more chicken quesadilla melt.
What Fresno says
Some Fresnans are not happy about it.
“Ohhhh hell’s bells....” said Estevan Garcia when he heard the news.
“I felt attacked when they got rid of the meximelt,” said Jacob Eckrich.
Comments like this abound across the internet.
There are 23 Taco Bell restaurants in Fresno and Clovis, an easy option during a coronavirus pandemic with their drive-thrus.
It’s likely no comfort for its mourning fans, but the company is adding some items to the menu.
The frozen dragonfruit freeze beverage and the chicken chipotle melt (“grilled chicken, creamy chipotle sauce, and cheddar cheese rolled and melted together”) will be added Nov. 5.
