ALDI grocery store is one step closer to opening in Fresno. Here’s what we know
ALDI is getting one step closer to opening in Fresno.
The discount grocery store’s new building at the northwest corner of Shaw and West avenues is up.
Its exterior appears to be mostly finished, though there is still plenty of work to be done inside and on the parking lot.
ALDI is a small, German-based grocer on a massive expansion kick with plans to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022. The company opened its first store in the area at Herndon and Fowler avenues in Clovis last fall.
The stores have a loyal following that is eagerly awaiting its Fresno location. Shoppers love the low prices, like a dozen eggs often priced at around $1 or less. The “ALDI finds” aisle is also popular, carrying a hodgepodge of items at steep discounts.
The stores, including Fresno’s, are around 12,000 square feet with only five or six aisles.
When will it open?
ALDI told The Bee it will open the store “this fall.”
It did not share any specifics beyond that. ALDI typically doesn’t share a lot of details, declining to confirm it planned to open a store in Fresno even as the “coming soon/Próximamente” sign went up on the building.
ALDI is being built on the corner that used to be home to Tang Dynasty and OfficeMax. Those buildings were torn down to make way for the grocery store.
There’s room for an additional 45,000 square feet of businesses to be constructed on the corner, said Shane Anderson of Commercial Retail Associates, who is handling leasing of the property. Though that portion is not being built yet, he said.
