Buzzfeed released a list of 30 must-try black-owned restaurants in America – and a Fresno restaurant is on it.

Chef Paul’s Cafe, a little restaurant with a big reputation at 952 F St. in downtown Fresno, is No. 27 on the list.

The pop culture and news website asked readers to tell about their favorite black-owned restaurants across the country. In the wake of George Floyd’s death, donating and peacefully protesting are ways to be an activist and an ally, along with supporting black-owned eateries, the story said.

A Fresno pastor also recently encouraged locals to patronize a long list of black-owned businesses in Fresno.

The story pictured an Instagram photo of Chef Paul’s fried chicken, mac ‘n cheese, collard greens, cornbread and green beans.

The comment accompanying the photo said: “This place makes the best shrimp and grits I have ever had. All of the sides are amazing, and you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. —joshuad42986d01b”

Chef Paul’s is also known for its oxtail soup and chicken and waffles.

The restaurant has received kudos from comedian Joe Rogan and a visit from supermodel Tyra Banks.

After closing completely for a while during the coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant is back open for take-out orders only, from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. It takes walk-in orders and customers can call in orders at 559-478-8516.

Other California restaurants appearing on the Buzzfeed list? Roscoe’s Chicken’s multiple locations, South restaurant in Sacramento, and Poppy + Rose and Bludsoe’s Bar & Que, both in Los Angeles.
