Want to eat at a restaurant? Here’s who’s open – or when they will be – in Fresno area
After nine weeks of shuttered dining rooms, Fresno County restaurants have been given the green light by the state to reopen for sit-down service.
It will be limited, of course, with people six feet apart and all sorts of other safety precautions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Restaurants are required to complete an online form detailing their various safety measures and submit it to the county’s Environmental Health Division before reopening. They also must agree to abide by California’s 12 pages of guidelines for restaurant safety.
Once that’s done, restaurants can open effective immediately.
But don’t expect everybody to open up immediately. Mimi’s Cafe, for example, won’t open until Friday, May 29.
It takes time to get things running again, said Mike Shirinian of the Elbow Room Bar & Grill in Fig Garden Village.
“The reason you can’t just open and flip the switch full blast is that you do have new procedures,” Shirinian said. “We’ve got a specific procedure for checking you in and proper distancing and getting you into your table.”
On Friday, the Elbow Room was getting staff back into the restaurant, training them on new cleaning procedures and ordering plexiglass dividers for booths. The restaurant plans to officially reopen Tuesday.
“Some people are just staying on unemployment because they can,” Shirinian said. “(We’re) getting the right staff back and doing the training on … the mechanics of all of that so we deliver a confident, comfortable experience for the guest. You can’t have the guest feeling as though they’re dining in the ICU.”
Some other restaurants may face delays in getting food from suppliers as every restaurant in the county gears up to open, Shirinian said.
Most restaurants will continue to do takeout and delivery as many customers won’t feel comfortable dining in yet, and operating at limited capacity still won’t bring in the income that restaurants made in pre-pandemic times.
Some restaurants are seating people by reservation only. Hours may have also changed, so call your favorite restaurant before showing up.
Note: This is not a comprehensive list of every restaurant in Fresno. There’s far too many for us to include every one here so if you’re wondering about a restaurant not on the list, give it call or check its social media accounts.
