Romano’s Macaroni Grill in River Park in Fresno announced it was closing in an email to customers back on March 20.

Most of us assumed it was shutting down temporarily, along with a handful of other restaurants during the coronavirus outbreak.

But no.

A Macaroni Grill representative confirmed with The Bee that the restaurant is permanently closed. She did not respond to questions about why the restaurant closed and if the coronavirus pandemic played a role.

Macaroni Grill opened in River Park in a newly constructed building in 1998.

The mid-level Italian restaurant chain where customers could draw on the paper table cloths and a worker would sing happy birthday in Italian has faced some challenges in recent years. It closed 37 locations and filed for bankruptcy in 2017. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2018 with 107 locations in the United States.

In the last few months of 2020, it has closed locations in Corpus Christi, Texas, Falls Township, Pennsylvania, and Albany, New York.
