A Marie Callender’s restaurant in Fresno is reopening. Here’s what you need to know
Marie Callender’s pie is coming back to Fresno.
Many Fresnans were surprised when The Bee broke the news back in August that both Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery locations in Fresno had closed without warning. But fans of the pie-centric eatery will be happy to hear that one of the locations is slated to reopen.
The Marie Callender’s at Shaw and Cedar avenues near Fresno State will reopen, confirmed Erin Van Veen, Marie Callender’s director of marketing.
The building needs some work first, she said. An opening is probably two or three months away and no specific date has been set.
As for the other location, on Blackstone Avenue, across the street from River Park?
“I don’t think there’s plans for that right now,” she said.
That building is up for lease. Its landlord did not return a call seeking comment earlier this month.
Reopening
A Marie Callender’s in Modesto reopened Jan. 9.
The restaurant’s parent company, which filed for bankruptcy in August, closed 19 underperforming company-owned locations that summer.
The company has a new owner and is continuing to work its way through bankruptcy. In both cases, the change has allowed new franchisees to take over the restaurants and reopen them, Van Veen said.
If it’s anything like the Modesto location, the restaurant will reopen with the same menu and pies, from chocolate cream to cherry and lemon meringue.
