This Fresno pizza restaurant landed on Yelp’s ‘Top 100 places to eat in 2020’
A locally owned Fresno pizza restaurant has landed on Yelp.com’s 2020 list of Top 100 Places to Eat, released Jan. 7.
The Curry Pizza Company 2 is No. 52 on the list.
That’s the second location for the Indian pizza place that opened in March. It’s at 2930 E. Nees Ave., at the northwest corner of Willow and Nees avenues near the Wassabi on Fire restaurant.
The original Curry Pizza restaurant opened in 2017 at 3173 W. Shaw Ave. near Marks Avenue.
The mom-and-pop restaurants serve both vegan and traditional pizzas. They have tandoori chicken masala and curry veggie pizza on the menu, though it’s the butter chicken and tandoori chicken pizzas that are the most popular.
Instead of red sauce, the pizzas are topped with curry sauce, butter chicken sauce, pesto sauce and other sauces.
The pizzas usually come with chicken, paneer (a cheese that people sometimes mistaken for tofu) or vegan toppings.
It has a separate vegan menu and all seven sauces are available in vegan versions, along with vegan cheese, making for an unusually large selection of vegan options.
Of course, you can get a pepperoni pizza and other traditional pizzas at the restaurant too. It also sells chicken wings, loaded curry fries, vegan appetizers, salads and pizza with gluten-free crust.
How Yelp chooses
Yelp’s list isn’t simply a compilation of restaurants with the best reviews.
The restaurant review site explained its formula this way: “Yelp’s data science team pulled the top restaurants by ratings and number of reviews in 2019 across the U.S., with representation based on each place’s share of top-rated restaurants nationally, then curated the list with the expertise of our Community Managers around the country to finalize the rankings.”
No. 1 on the list is a food truck, Shawarma Guys, in San Diego.
In 2018, Three Rivers’ Sierra Subs & Salads landed on Yelp’s Top 100 list.
Often, Yelp reviewers with specialized diets, say vegans or gluten-free folks, are motivated to leave reviews, especially while traveling out of town. That may be part of the reason many small and specialized restaurants end up on the list, which Yelp acknowledges is “as quirky, interesting and unique as the Yelp Community itself.”
