You can soon make a Target run – including buying wine – without leaving home

Shoppers can make a Target run without leaving their homes starting next month.

Along with CVS and Vons, Target will offer same-day delivery starting Oct. 11 when Shipt delivery service launches in Central California. Shipt will be available in Fresno, Visalia, Porterville and Merced.

A similar delivery service, Instacart, is already available in the area. That service makes deliveries from Costco, Sprouts, Vons, Sam’s Club, Smart & Final, CVS, Petco, Total Wine & More, BevMo! and Sur La Table. Walmart has a service where shoppers can pick up their groceries in the store’s parking lots.

But Shipt is the first in the Fresno area to deliver from Target.

This is important because Target shoppers, often women, have an intense loyalty to the store. It is frequently the subject of internet memes about shoppers leaving with more than they intended to buy and how solo Target runs are seen as mini vacations for moms of young children.

Shipt, which can deliver in as little as an hour, includes purchases of beer and wine. Customers must be at least 21 and show identification upon delivery.

Shipt and Target’s partnership also includes purchases of electronics, beauty products, dishes (including wine glasses to go with that wine), bath towels and home supplies like paper towels.

It does not include clothing, but a Shipt representative said all of Target’s product categories will be available by 2019.

Like Instacart or Uber Eats, Shipt users shop and pay for their purchases via an app. The “Shipt shopper” picks up the items in the store and delivers them to the buyer.

Shipt users get free delivery on orders over $35 if they pay a yearly membership fee, typically $99. That fee has been reduced to $49 for shoppers who sign up on Shipt’s website before Oct. 11.

Non-members pay a $7 delivery fee.

Prices on merchandise are slightly higher to cover the cost of picking, packing and processing. For example, the company says users can expect to pay about $5 more using Shipt than they would on a $35 purchase they purchased themselves in the store.

Shipt is hiring shoppers in the area. Job seekers are encouraged to apply on its website.
