Delicious Discoveries: Turn up the heat with spicy ketchup
If you think ketchup is only good for french fries and hamburgers, you haven’t tasted the Traina company’s sriracha sun dried tomato ketchup.
This ketchup has a kick. Traina Foods, which is based in Patterson, took its regular sun dried tomato ketchup and added some heat, thanks to a blend of chile and spices. What you get is a condiment with the deep flavor of sun dried tomatoes, a bit of sweetness and a satisfying amount of spiciness.
Marybeth Brandabur, director of retail sales for Traina, says the possibilities for the new ketchup are endless. Not only can you use it like regular ketchup, but the intense flavors lend themselves for use as an ingredient.
Other ideas include mixing it with yogurt for use as a dip or adding it to hummus for additional flavor.
“Last year, we had a competition for best recipe and the winner made an ice cream with the sriracha ketchup, dried mango, ice cream and pineapple,” Brandabur says.
The sriracha ketchup is $4.99 for a 16-ounce bottle and can be found online through the company’s website, www.trainafoods.com, or locally at Sam’s Club.
